We were appointed as Principal contractor for Phase 3 works to the Grand Staircase of privately owned Medieval Castle in County Durham. Following the successful completion of Phase 3 works a further package of Phase 4 works was negotiated with the Client, PQS & Architect. A wonderful Restoration project through the harsh winter months in County Durham under the cover of a temporary scaffold structure. Working closely with the design team to install traditional sandcast lead roof coverings. Where not possible to install lead due to Structural Engineer weight restrictions install lighter Zinc roof coverings. The works undertaken by CEL Group (1989) Ltd were awarded finalist for the Ian Harvey Architectural Award. Replacement of existing lead roofs where at end of natural working life with replacement ventilated raised boarded roof structure and Sandcast Lead. Replacement of felt roofing with new raised boarded roof structure with Zinc roof covering. Refurbishment of existing feature brass glazed lightwell over the castle Grand Staircase – repairs and replacement bronzework and replacement glass. Tented scaffold roof structure over glazed lightwell. Preservative treatment works within existing roofspaces. Structural timber repairs including structural steel strengthen and resin repairs to roof timbers. Masonry repair and repointing. Carpentry works to raised roof structures and repairs to structural timbers. Roof ventilation works. Replacement roof skylights.
