The Tennis Pavilion at Wellesley Recreation Ground, Great Yarmouth was built in 1890. The Grade II listed building is built of red brick with applied timber studs and rails forming rendered panels, machine tiled roof to enclosed part, corrugated asbestos to verandah. This project involved carrying out extensive repairs and modifications to bring the building back into use and provide changing facilities and light refreshments/tea-making facilities. The extensive repairs involved sympathetically removing and laying aside various components for re-use where possible, carrying out repairs, replacement or provide new as specified where repair is not possible. The timber fenestration and ‘Mock Tudor’ design had been affected by wet rot, dry rot, and wood boring insect infestation. The workmanship involved in this project has since been recognised nationally when we became finalists at the 2024 RICS Awards.

As the project lead/designer for the council on this project, I had to commend C.E.L Group (1989) Ltd on their professional approach throughout this extremely delicate and difficult refurbishment of a very dilapidated building. The quality of the workmanship and materials used could not be faulted - M P Clarke, Building Surveyor.
